HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT BICYCLE LOCK

Bicycle theft happens more often than you think, even with locked bicycles. The cause? Incorrect use of bicycle locks or poor quality bicycle locks. Unfortunately, bicycle theft is still common, especially in busy cities. Fortunately, you can reduce the chance of theft with the right bicycle lock. In this blog you will discover which bicycle locks provide a good lock, which types of bicycle locks there are, which bicycle lock you need for your insurance, and how to make the right choice for your type of bicycle.

The different types of bicycle locks

Not all bike locks are the same. Depending on where you use your bike and what type of bike you have, there are different options for a good bike lock. We are happy to list the bike locks for you:

Ring lock

A ring lock is the most well-known lock there is. This bicycle lock is attached to the frame and blocks the rear wheel when your bicycle is locked. The ring lock is the only lock that is not fully effective, because you can still move the bicycle on the front wheel. In busy cities it is therefore not recommended. In combination with a second chain lock, the ring lock is effective. It is especially suitable for short stops or as a supplement to another lock.

Chain lock

A chain lock is a flexible bike lock and offers your bike high-level security. With a chain lock you can secure your bike to an object, such as a bike rack, lamppost or another bike. The thicker the chain, the harder it is to cut through – but also heavier to carry.

Folding lock

Folding locks combine strength with compactness. These bicycle locks are lighter than a chain lock and easier to store. Thanks to the design, the lock can be used flexibly, without compromising on security.

Cable lock

Cable locks are light and easy to carry bike locks, but they offer limited security. They are mainly suitable as an additional lock, for example to secure your bike to another bike or a pole.

What should you pay attention to when choosing a bicycle lock?

When choosing a bike lock, it's all about safety, ease of use and portability. Therefore, pay attention to the following points:

  • Security level: Check if the lock has an ART quality mark. Good quality bicycle locks have this quality mark.
  • Ease of use: How easy is the lock to use? A lock that you can fasten quickly and easily is something you will actually use. An awkward lock is more likely to be left behind, with the risk of theft.
  • Weight and size: A heavy chain lock offers a lot of security, but is less practical to carry. Consider what weight and size works best for you.
  • Parking situation: Are you parking your bike in a busy city or in a guarded bike shed? The location determines which lock is most suitable.

Extra tip: combine different types of locks for maximum security. Bike thieves are more likely to abandon bikes with multiple locks.

Which bicycle lock do I need for my insurance?

Do you have an electric bike or an expensive city bike? Then bicycle insurance is often a logical choice. But be careful: insurance companies often set requirements for the type of bicycle lock you use. Which lock do you need? We are happy to explain:

The most important condition is the use of an ART-approved lock. Usually:

  • ART 2 is the minimum requirement for standard e-bikes.
  • ART 3 is recommended or mandatory for high-end e-bikes and speed pedelecs.
  • Locks without ART certification are usually not accepted by insurers. In case of theft, you may not receive compensation.

So don't just pay attention to safety, but also to the insurance requirements. Always check the policy conditions of your insurer and keep the proof of purchase of your lock. In the event of a claim, you often have to prove which lock you used.
